By now you’re getting a good sense of your podcast show flow. Sure you’re still making adjustments, but the core style and vibe of your show is coming together….or is it?

One of the things I enjoy about NaPodPoMo is the loose and free form experimental nature of it all. So you have an idea for a show and you start with that, but then new ideas pop up, then you want to go from no bells and whistles to adding some intro and outro music. Or maybe you started NaPodPoMo with a highly produced show and realize that maybe a looser format might be more your style.

The beauty of being part of such a long challenge is that it gives you the time and permission to figure things out along the way. You don’t have to have a fully baked show in order to begin. Or let’s say you decide to adjust or alternate your show. It’s totally allowed! Want to know why? Because you are in experiment mode (we all are) and the only person you need to ask permission from to make subtle or radical changes to your podcast is you!

So mix up your podcast ideas as you see fit. At some point in this challenge things will begin to click into place. You’ll know it when you get to that point. It’s like everything makes sense. Keep adjusting, trying new things, and tweaking your show. Consider this your podcast experiment lab. Your lab coat, safety glass, are next to the wall.and I see that your mic is warmed up and your headphones are at the ready.

But Did You Actually Go Live?

Remember in episode 7 when I talked about going live, but forgetting to record my episode? Well this morning I realized in all of my patting myself on the back and high fiving myself that when I had forget one big thing. When I restarted my computer a couple of days ago I had selected the straight recording session instead of the broadcast session inside of Audio Hijack

So while I had done everything correctly inside of the Blubrry PowerPress plugin:

  1. Scheduling the upcoming show with Pending
  2. Changing the Pending notice to Live
  3. Changing the Live notice to Ended

When I looked at my podcast on Fountain.fm, it showed I was live. BUT, since I was not using the broadcast session, nothing was actually being heard live. Again, ugh! Sure I was recording it. After all I was using the recording session. but the whole live thing was a non event. Sigh.

This is of course complete operator error. PowerPress was doing its job exactly as designed. Audio Hijack was also doing it’s job as designed and is exactly the right tool to use for both broadcasting and recording…as long as I’m using the correct session.

My pre-show checklist has a new item listed: “Be sure to use the “Broadcast Session”. These are truly the lessons learned along the way.
